Dr. Maoyi Cai, DOM, M.D.

Dr. Maoyi Cai served as a board member of the Acupuncture Committee of Alberta, Canada, from 2003 to 2005. He was also the Dean of Academic Affairs at Alberta College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, between 1997 and 2005. Dr. Cai passed the American and Canadian medical licensing examinations and was certified as an M.D. in 1997 and 1999, respectively. Between 1990 and 1996, Dr. Cai taught a variety of biomedical science courses at colleges and universities in Texas and New Mexico. Dr. Cai practiced medicine, in the Shanghai Medical University, from 1984 to 1990. Dr. Cai joined the faculty of the Texas Health and Science University in January 2006. Dr. Cai has been the Academic Dean since 2008.

Tama Henderson is licensed by the Texas Medical Board to practice acupuncture and herbal medicine in the State of Texas. Ms. Henderson holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin, College of Communications. She went on to receive her master’s degree in acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from AOMA, The Graduate School of Integrative Medicine, in 2009. She currently sees patients in her private practice, where she specializes in orthopedic and pain-related conditions. With over 13 years of clinical experience, Ms. Henderson is an adjunct member of the Texas Health and Science University faculty.  She teaches various classes and supervises student interns in the clinic.

Ms. Allison Yu is an experienced practitioner and instructor of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with over a decade of clinical experience in Austin, TX, including roles at Acupuncture Health Clinic and Texas Health and Science University, where she also serves as Herb Director and TCM clinical supervisor. She holds a Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Pacific College of Health and Science (2021), a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Texas Health and Science University (2009), and a Master of Education in Counseling and Education from the University of North Texas (1991). Licensed in Texas and certified by the NCCAOM, she has also taught career counseling in Taipei, Taiwan. Fluent in Chinese and Taiwanese, her interests include pickleball, tennis, piano, and Pilates.

Sung Moon Rhim, L.Ac., MSAOM

Ms. Moon is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, nationally certified Board-Certified Diplomat of Oriental Medicine by NCCAOM, and a member of the EBM. She completed her Oriental Medicine education in Los Angeles, California, and afterward, she underwent an intensive clinical practice in Silicon Valley, where she treated over 10,000 patients. She is currently a DAOM candidate with a focus on PTSD, Anxiety, Insomnia, Depression, Addiction, and other psychological symptoms. Furthermore, Ms. Rhim has a great number of experience in applying Bio-Acupuncture, facial rejuvenation techniques, and internal medicine. She teaches clinic classes in Austin and San Antonio.

Dr. Lew brings an infectious enthusiasm and spirit of entrepreneurship to her work in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. Since obtaining her license, she has expanded her acupuncture practice from a one-treatment-room clinic to an eight-treatment-room facility over 10 years with six employees. Dr. Lew formerly served as the Dean of Students and Admissions Coordinator at THSU. She has also worked as a computer troubleshooter and trainer of students and state employees at the University of Texas at Austin Information Technology Services.

Dr. Justin Phillips began his journey into health and energy through martial arts and meditation from a young age, leading him to a career in Traditional East Asian Medicine. He earned his Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and his Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from AOMA College of Integrative Medicine. Dr. Phillips has held significant roles including Head of East Asian Medicine at Austin Integrative Medicine, Associate Dean and Director of Clinical Studies at the Healing Tao Institute of Austin, and Clinical Director for Modern Acupuncture of Austin. He has published articles and a textbook on needle technique and specializes in treating orthopedic pain, thyroid disorders, and psycho-social trauma. Certified in Mental Health First Aid, Dr. Phillips enjoys rock climbing, mountain biking, and obstacle course racing and is also a published fiction author.

Dr. Cao earned her Master’s degree in 2003 and her Doctorate in 2006. She came to the University in January of 2007 with over ten years of experience as a clinician, instructor, and researcher in Traditional Chinese Medicine, specializing in Internal Medicine. She has published original research in journals such as Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine on Digestion and has edited volumes such as Methodology of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Dr. Hong has instructed many students in Traditional Chinese Medicine since 2008.  In addition to his teaching, Dr. Hong has served as academic dean in Korean and English language MSTCM programs, participated in program evaluation, served as a campus security officer, and assisted in the adoption of several online program management systems.  Dr. Hong’s broad experience as a licensed acupuncturist and earned doctorate make him a welcome addition to our core faculty at Texas Health and Science University.

Dr. Guili Zheng, Ph.D., L.Ac.

Dr. Zheng served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Associate Dean at Shandong University of TCM. He is a member of the China National Committee of Chinese Medicinal Formulae, paper reviewer of Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Journal of Shanxi Traditional Chinese Medicine. In addition to his more than 20 years of teaching, research, and clinical research experience, Dr. Zheng has almost 20 papers and books of TCM published in both Chinese and English. Dr. Zheng joined the faculty of Texas Health and Science University in 2001.

Mr. Ramirez has experience working at a reflexology and massage spa while obtaining his credentials in Chinese  medicine. His teaching experience includes tutoring classmates, doing presentations at health fairs, translating English to Chinese, and instructing patients in promoting a healthy lifestyle. Mr. Ramirez is passionate about advocating for the healing potential of acupuncture, herbs, and complementary modalities.
